Mallheur National Wildlife Refuge - May 2021

Malheur Wildlife Refuge is located about 30 miles south of Burns, Oregon.  It's known as a "bird trap" for migrating birds, and come springtime (the best time being in May), thousands of birds descend on this desert oasis to rest and re-nourish as they continue upon their chosen flight paths.  Nancy and I had never been to Malheur, though we had heard of its beauty and birds.  If you decide to go, know that its rural SE Oregon location is wide open--it's ranching country, the environment can be harsh, and services are limited.  We were fortunate to find a ranch that offered a room with kitchen adjoining the barn and located just a few miles from the refuge.  If you go, be prepared for sun, wind, rain, hail, and everything in between! But its worth it at the right time of year.

Here is a rather long showcase of birds and landscapes we saw.
